James Leonard Handel passed away peacefully on December 26, 2017 due to congestive heart failure in his daughter’s home in Pollock Pines; he was 87 years old. James (Jim) was born on January 3rd, 1930 in Lodi California. He attended Lodi high school and boxed/graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a history major. He then went on to teach for many years within the Mt. Diablo school district as a physical education and math teacher. Jim married Helen Dyer on April 22nd, 1951. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a hunter safety instructor, and was an active member of the Concord Sportsmen’s Club. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Janet Handel and Fred Loyd, his son David Handel, his grandchildren, Nicole Costa, Teresa Merrill, and Marie Lazdowski, and his three great-grandchildren, Gabriel Costa, Joseph Costa, and Madison Merrill. His service will be held at Oakmont Memorial Park (925-935-3311) on Thursday, January 4th at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Concord Sportsmen’s Club, Hospice East Bay, or Snowline Hospice.
