April 24th, 1954 – December 17th, 2017
It is with great sadness that the family of Mark Steven Carter announces his unexpected passing on Sunday, December 17th, 2017, at the age of 63 years in Walnut Creek, CA. Mark was born on April 24th, 1954 in Oakland to Dorothy Adele Steneberg and Mervyn Jennings Carter.
Mark grew up in Lafayette and attended Acalanes High School where he graduated in 1972. He went on to attend the University of California Berkeley, earning his BA in Economics in 1976. Mark was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and was a lifetime booster of Cal Berkeley Athletics.
In 1988 Mark was a founding principal of Sequoia Equities,Inc. a highly respected real estate investment firm based in Walnut Creek, California. Since then Mark led the acquisition of an apartment based real estate portfolio now valued in excess of $3 billion. He was cherished by the many employees within his firm and was a trusted and respected leader within his industry.
Mark grew up in a sports oriented family and would become a lifelong fan of all sports with a love of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers along with the Cal Berkeley teams. Mark volunteered his time to coach and share his love of sports with his children and nephews.
Mark married Judy Holt on June 8, 1994 and had three children, Katie (22), Hayley (21) & Matt (19). Mark loved to spend time with his family visiting Lake Tahoe, Laguna Beach and Hawaii. Mark and Judy are active supporters of the Athenian school where all three of their children attended.
Mark was loved by his family, friends and colleagues who all appreciated his warmth, humility, true friendship and generosity. Mark was one of the most caring and supportive persons one would meet. He always made time for others and was truly a great guy. He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege to know him.
Mark will be lovingly remembered by his wife Judy; children, Katie, Hayley and Matt; his brothers Mervyn (Tammy) and Dennis (Cristina); his brother in-law Dave (Barbara) Holt, sister in-law Nancy (Randy) Hecht and their parents, Earle and Marianne Holt; his aunt Betty Wiley and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
