Obituary for Lorraine Juliet Samberg

Lorraine Juliet Samberg
Our beloved Lorraine enjoyed a full life.
As a child in New York, she was the focus of loving parents. She had friends and cousins, loved the seashore, playing cards with her daddy, singing and dancing.
She was a defining member of “The Greatest Generation.” Just out of her teens, she met the love of her life and married him as he earned his Army Airforce wings. He was sent to India during WWII.
After the war the couple began home life in a suburb of New York. They had a daughter, Laurel, and a son, Mark.
They moved to Boston and then to Cincinnati for Howard’s career. Lorraine was happy and fulfilled to be a mother and a home-maker. Lorraine was always proud to define herself as Mrs. Howard Samberg. She saw to lessons and activities for her children, prepared and hosted holiday celebrations for family, curated and cared for her home. She enjoyed singing in the choir at their Unitarian churches. There were ocean-side and lakeside vacations.
The family moved to Berkeley, California where Howard became a successful business owner. The couple enjoyed some traveling, including via Howard’s small plane.
In 1975 Lorraine became a widow. The business carried on with Lorraine as owner and President. She kept photos of her employees’ children in her office.
Her son gave her four grandchildren, Justin, Jeremy, Louis and, Anne. Lorraine hosted and attended family dinners as long as she could.
She loved her family. She couldn’t be rushed. She took her time. She ate slowly and savored her desserts. She dressed elegantly, with care, every day.
Her humor was dry and witty. She maintained life-long friendships. She remained independent, driving her own car and doing her own shopping until age 90.
She endured the loss of her son, Mark, 7 months ago. And at the same time rejoiced at the birth of two great-granddaughters.
She was composed, compassionate, and dignified. She enjoyed bringing people together.
Whatever the decade, she maintained her own style, her decorum, her love for family and friends and interest in current events.
With more than 90 years of experience, her counsel was to enjoy every day, every minute.
